Tichy made his own cameras, to create a unique, dreamlike quality. He also often sketched over the top of the dreamy images...
Yes, he does look like a hobo, and if you google him to find some of his works, you may come to the conclusion that he was a perverted hermit with a homemade camera. I guess you could say so, however have a look at his website, or the book of his collected work.
